Holiday Gift Guide: California Wine Club $50 Gift Certificate

I love trying out new wines and that's why I was so excited to work with California Wine Club this holiday season. I think wine is a perfect gift for most occasions and always welcome a nice bottle of wine from friends and family. I'm not picky about the types of wine I like. In fact, I am always trying out different wines and this is why I especially love California Wine Club. Their wine clubs, four in all, give members a chance to experience different types of wine each month. We received one bottle of red wine and one bottle of white wine for two months and each bottle was equally delicious and of great quality. The California Wine Club gave us a chance to try wines we would not easily be able to find here in our small mountain town!

Do you love sampling different wines, too? Or do you know someone who does?

Well, we are so excited to offer Children Teaching Mama Readers the chance to win a $50 Gift Certificate to the California Wine Club!

Holiday Gift Guide: I See Me! ABC What I Can Be! Personalized Children's Book Review & Giveaway

My daughter, A, is just about 20 months (boy does time fly!!). We've tried to be really good about not getting her very many toys, or getting her toys very often, which is super hard sometimes! We prefer educational toys and definitely let her get books when she wants them, so her collection is slowly growing. She loves the "touch and feel books", and books that have things that she recognizes in them.

Our newest addition to her library, is a personalized book from I See Me!

ABC What Abigail Can Be!

I love this book! It's full of bright colors, and busy pictures, which is perfect for my busy little toddler. I think the best part of this book is that her name is included in the pages and that it is personalized just for her. It's her special book!
Every page has her name on it somewhere!

My absolute favorite part of this book? When we're reading it to her and she realizes that her name is in it. We can teach her the alphabet in a way that keeps her interested and happy, too. Her face lights up, she smiles, sometimes we even get a giggle! It has definitely made me start looking for more personalized books and such for her.

Do you have any of the I See Me! Personalized Children Books? If so, tell me what you love about them!

Thanks to I See Me! One Lucky Reader Will Receive Their Own Personalized I See Me ABC What I Can Be! Children's Book!

Nostalgia Electrics Coca-Cola Series Mini Hot Air Popcorn Maker Review & Giveaway

banner

Do you know a family that loves to watch movies together? Or perhaps strings popcorn to decorate their Christmas tree? Well if you do then I have the perfect gift idea for you. And here at the Harper Household we do both of those things so this item has been getting lots of use. Curious what it is? A Coca-Cola Series Mini Hot Air Popcorn Maker from Nostalgia Electrics!Nostalgia Electrics
I absolutely love fresh popped popcorn and it gets no fresher than when you have your very own hot air popcorn maker. I was very excited when we received the Coca-Cola Series Mini Hot Air Popcorn Maker because it arrives ready to use – no assembly required! I also love the Coca-Cola retro look of this popcorn maker because it adds that touch of nostalgia that is just fun.
IMG_6444
This popcorn maker is super easy to use too. Simply remove the clear plastic housing and red lid then turn the unit on. While it is heating up for approximately two minutes fill the red lid to the line with popcorn kernels. Turn off the machine and pour the kernels into the popper. Replace the clear plastic housing and red lid then turn the unit back on. Make sure to place a bowl under the popcorn chute to catch all that hot fresh popcorn when it starts flowing out – each batch makes about 8 cups! Once the popping stops turn the machine off and make sure to empty any leftover kernels or pieces of popcorn from the popper. Since it uses no oil clean up is a breeze not to mention the popcorn is much healthier too! And one more thing I love is the nice compact size of this machine because I can easily store it inside a cupboard freeing up counter space.
IMG_6445IMG_6448IMG_6453IMG_6458
To add to the fun I picked up some plastic popcorn containers from the $1 section of our local Target – they came two in a pack! The girls have had a blast eating their popcorn out of them while watching movies. And I love that it’s a nice healthy treat for them since they like it as is without butter or salt added. Pairing up the Nostalgia Electrics Coca-Cola Series Mini Hot Air Popcorn Maker with a set of these containers and perhaps a movie or two would make an awesome Christmas gift the entire family could enjoy together!
IMG_6460IMG_6457
Make sure to browse around the Nostalgia Electrics website because they have lots more popcorn makers to choose from including kettle and stir popcorn makers as well as kettle corn makers – Dustin would love that. Plus they carry lots of other fun small appliances including fondue fountains, a variety of refreshment makers, fun food makers (cotton candy, snow cones, hot dogs, soft pretzels, etc.), and more! All of their products are perfect for a simply family evening at home or for entertaining large groups at birthday parties or other fun gatherings.
Oh and guess what! One lucky reader will win their very own Nostalgia Electrics Coca-Cola Series Mini Hot Air Popcorn Maker. To enter simply fill out the Rafflecopter entry form below.

Candle Warmers, Etc. Aurora Candle Lamp Review & Giveaway

Before having children I had candles everywhere and would light them daily. Now that I have two rambunctious boys running around, I don't light them as often because I'm afraid they will get burned or knock it over. I worry about their safety, which is why I was so excited to receive the Aurora Candle Lamp from Candle Warmers.

About Candle Warmers
Founded in 2001, the idea was conceived that a different method should be used for releasing fragrance from a candle and Candle Warmers, Etc. was born. Candle Warmers, Etc. develops, manufactures, and distributes patented candle warming appliances and other related giftware appliances and accessories to accent and fragrance the home. Candle Warmers Etc. also manufactures and distributes Jamie Clair hand-poured, scented candles bringing both wicked and wickless candle options to discerning customers. Candle Warmers, Etc.'s commitment to enhancing the home with affordable and safe candle warmer appliances and accessories has contributed to its success with several varied product lines.

My Thoughts
I've never considered burning candles in such a unique way! I couldn't wait to plug in my Aurora Candle Lamp and give it a try. We received the Winter White Jamie Clair candle, which also has three wicks, so I can burn it or use the candle lamp. The lamp is so pretty and fits very well with the rest of our decor. We put it on the island in the kitchen so we can enjoy it in both the kitchen and living room.
Once plugged in, I didn't notice the scent for about 30 minutes, but then the delicious scent floated throughout the house. Winter White is a blend of citrus, mint, amber, peppermint and sweet vanilla sugar. Together it almost smells like a cologne. At first I thought maybe my husband had tried a new kind, but then I realized the candle scent really did reach the back of the house! I was really impressed that the warmer was so powerful. The great thing is that I don't have to worry about the kids starting a fire or filling the kitchen with smoke smells when blowing out the candles.
Photobucket
We've actually switched out several other candles to try on the Aurora Candle Lamp and it works just as well on those, too. I love that there is an alternative to burning candles where I can still make the entire house smell wonderful. Plus, the lamp and candle just look so pretty when lit up. With a red candle, it even looks like Christmas decor.

Now that you've read our review, how about a giveaway?

One Lucky Reader Will Also Receive an Aurora Candle Lamp from Candle Warmers, Etc. and a Jamie Clair Candle!
Just use the Rafflecopter form below to enter. This giveaway is open to US residents, 18+ years of age and ends on Tuesday, December 18th at 11:59pm. Good Luck!

Holiday Gift Guide: Caboodle Kids Review & Giveaway

When little children start showing an eagerness for learning, it's important to have fun and engaging resources on hand to inspire and teach them. That's the idea behind Caboodle Kids early learning products.

The Caboodle Kids "Critter Crew" is featured on all of their learning resources, which are designed with toddlers and pre-schoolers in mind.

We received the Rhyming Critter Crew Alphabet Cards ($14.95) and the Alphabet Critter Crew Color-Me Placements (retail $10.95) to try with our four-year-old, Benjamin.

Right off, I loved how large, sturdy and colorful the alphabet cards were. Most others that you find in stores are small and flimsy. Each card is two-sided; one side shows the letter and animal character and word. The reverse illustrates both the capital and lowercase, plus a sentence using the animal character's name. Because each letter is tied to an animal with a real name, it helps to reinforce the letter and sound in your child's mind. The sentences are also set up in rhyming pairs, and that helps even more to anticipate the next letter. For example: "Quentin Quail flies next to a kite. Rajini Rabbit steals veggies at night."

Benjamin likes the cards a lot! We haven't done any work with letters until now and he's already learned A through E in just one week using the Caboodle Kids cards. The only issue we've encountered is that some of the animal names are hard to say and remember. It would be much easier for Benjamin to memorize something easy like Sam Squirrel instead of Satoshi Squirrel, or Rosy Rabbit instead of Rajini Rabbit. I'm pretty sure the names were chosen in the interest of diversity, but my personal opinion is that for such young ages, it would be better to keep things as simple and short as possible.

The place mats are very useful for reinforcing the letters that your child is learning. They are large and easy to color. This was one of Benjamin's favorites. He's still working on it because I find at this age it's hard to keep him occupied with any one activity for a long time!

There are many images in the place mat book that he told me looked "weird" and I would agree. The artwork appears to be computer-generated (see image below) and some of the animals have strange proportions (overly large heads, for example) or eerie-looking faces. I would love to see the place mats redesigned with higher quality, more appealing artwork, especially since it's for very little children who are drawn to cute and cuddly critters.

I think the whole concept behind Caboodle Kids is wonderful, and they are on the right track. We are happy to have some useful and fun tools in our kit that will reinforce Benjamin's early learning.

You can find Caboodle Kids on the web at http://www.caboodlekids.com and purchase products directly from the catalog.

Let's Do Our Part To Raise Awareness for Premature Delivery & RSV #protectpreemies #rsv

When pregnant with Josiah, I thought he would never makes his appearance.  In fact, he was several days late and, when he finally decided to make his debut, he was almost 9 pounds! I remember thinking several times throughout the pregnancy how I could barely wait to finally meet him and, towards the end of the pregnancy, I just wanted it to be over because I was so big. However, I didn't know what having a preemie would entail and all the risks that are associated with it. Then came Liam... 5 weeks early. Although he was over 7 pounds when born, his lungs were not fully developed. This caused my poor boy to struggle with breathing, so he was held in the NICU and eventually had to be intubated for 2 days.
My Little Man only hours after his birth.

Did you know that worldwide over 13 million babies are born prematurely, including half a million of which are born in the US? It is such a scary experience for both the baby and for the parents and something I wish I'd considered a possibility with repercussions ahead of time. Eventually his little lungs caught up and he was released after two weeks. We were very lucky, but in the meantime, we were lucky enough to take a parenting class all about preemature birth and taking care of our newborn preemie. It was eye opening and a class I wished all parents were required to take before leaving the hospital.

When I hear parents wishing to go into labor at 35 weeks now, I think of it in a completely different way. Unfortunately, many parents do not know much about the possibility of premature delivery and the medical complications that can ensue. That is why November 17th is so very important! November 17th is National Preemie Awareness Day, a day dedicated to educating parents about the possibility of preterm delivery and the risks involved. Just like many parents, we never expected a premature delivery and I couldn't help but feel completely helpless and fearful for my child. Education is key to helping parents learn about premature delivery.
When Liam was able to come home, we were so excited, especially because this was the first time Josiah finally got to meet his little brother. However, we weren't really able to show him off for a while because, as a preemie, he was susceptible to germs, infection and respiratory issues. One of the things we learned about in our preemie class was RSV, a virus effecting almost all babies by the age of two. Being a preemie and contracting RSV is so very dangerous for their fragile immune systems. We were lucky and very careful with Liam, but there were other preemies in the NICU who were not as lucky. Did you know severe cases of RSV are up to 10 times more likely to end in death than the fly? It's a very scary fact. Click here for more information from the RSV Protection website.
Liam all grown up as a monkey this Halloween!

It is more important from November to March, named the "RSV Season" by the CDC, to be mindful about the possibility of RSV. How are some ways you can help prevent RSV? One of the easiest things we can do is wash our hands and keep them clean. We actually kept hand sanitizer in almost every room when we brought Liam home. You can also wipe down toys and keep play areas clean. We use a great deal of anti-bacterial spray and wipes, wanting to provide a clean and safe play room for the kids. Also, as I mentioned earlier, we kept Liam inside and away from big crowds as a preemie and, since he is now undergoing chemotherapy, we are also doing the same because of his weak immune system.

What do you do to protect your children from RSV?

Please be mindful of these ways to help prevent RSV and let your friends know the risks associated with preemature delivery. I wish I'd known more about it ahead of time, but now that I do know from my own experiences, I think it's so important to teach others. We should celebrate Preemie Awareness Day and RSV Prevention year-round by teaching others about both subjects.

U By Kotex Brings Moms and Daughters Together For The Big Talk #KotexMom

I was so excited when picked to be a U By Kotex Mom Ambassador this June and have had such a great time writing posts and participating in all of the fun activities over the past 6 months. When I was a young girl just getting my period for the first time, it was a confusing time because my mom never took the time to talk to me about it. Everything she did share with me was how horrible it was, so when I got my period I was completely clueless. Plus, my mom was out of town when the big day finally arrived. There was no way I would ever let this happen with Rylee. I want her to have the opposite experience and to embrace change and womanhood. I think this is something important for all girls and moms should take the time to answer questions, be there for them and let them know what to expect.
Checking out the U by Kotex products for the first time!
Before the ambassadorship began, I had not yet spoken to Ry about her period and, honestly, I was in denial about how quickly she is growing into a beautiful young woman. When I started writing my "period posts" I realized she was ready for these talks and I knew she would have many questions. Over the past 6 months, I've had the opportunity to speak with Ry several times about her period and what to expect. I can tell such an attitude change now! At the beginning, she was very shy and would get embarrassed when I brought up the subject. Now, she openly asks me questions and is very prepared for when the day arrives.
Big girl at the beach this summer.
In particular, I really enjoyed our Mom & Daughter Day Out we shared a few months ago. We went out to eat and just spent some time without the boys around. I was able to focus completely on her and she loved every minute of the attention. Having girl time is so important and, from my own experience, I know she will cherish this moments when she grows up. I fondly remember dates with my mom when we would go out to eat or to the movies.
Showing me her U by Kotex Pads!
Rylee also had a chance to check out the U by Kotex products and has remarked several times how "cool" they are. I love that they are just for tweens, have different designs and are colorful. This makes them less scary for first-timers and more fun to use, too. She was actually excited to start carrying around her period emergency pack in her backpack. It is discretely hidden and her little secret, which is exciting for her.

U by Kotex has definitely brought us closer together and I am so grateful for this opportunity. We've shared all the talks I wish I'd had with my own mom and we've had a great time doing so. I was able to find some great information on the Kotex website. Your daughter can also find answer to questions and other period information on the U by Kotex Hello Period website. Just click on the U by Kotex link above.

Have you talked to your daughter about her period or did you before she started? Did it bring you closer together?

I wrote this review while participating in a Brand Ambassador Campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of U by Kotex Tween and received products to facilitate my post and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Whole Body Workout At Home

So you want a flatter stomach and think just focusing on your abs will make that happen. Do you
wonder why you don’t see the results you want, and then give up?
Well something you may never have been told is that to lose weight and tone up requires you to
work the whole body. Yes it’s not the answer you wanted but it is achievable and at the comfort of
your own home. The trick is that the more muscles you work the more calories you burn.
Things you’ll need:

Belly-buster
To banish that muffin top work on different sets with your abs and increase your reps when the
routine becomes too easy.
Plank- You will need to hold the plank for at least 30 seconds and then release.

Mountain climbers- this will work the core muscles of your stomach which will then strengthen it.

Bicycle crunch –twist your body so your elbows touch your knees and break down reps of 15-20 with
slower bicycle crunches.
Legs
Leg lifts- Begin with 15 reps on each leg and then repeat once, then on your next work out build up
your routine by 5-10 sets.
Squats- Many people think that the quicker you do a squat the quicker the results, this is a myth. By
moving slowly you will tone up more. To break down the squats do a set of 4 squats then 4 bottom
halves and repeat all the way through a 3-4 minute song.
Lunges- When performing your lunges exercise it important to perfect this technique rather than
injure yourself. Do 15 -20 reps on each leg depending on you are used to lunges. Then add reps as
you progress.
Arms
Triceps dip- use the edge of your chair and put the palm of your hands on the edge of seat. Sit at a
90 degree angle and slowly go down breathing equally.
Press ups- This another great exercise because as well as the arms it works muscles around the body.
If you need to use your knees for support then do so. Slowly build your strength so you can hold a
press up without the support of your knees.
Running
If you are not a runner by nature then build yourself up, use the stairs to run up and down in.
Whether you are carrying your washing, new clothes then run up the stairs at every opportunity
you get. If you use public transport a lot then get off a stop or two early and brisk walk. Waiting for
dinner to heat up then don’t waste time jog on the spot for 30 seconds then up to a minute and so
on.
Food
If you are someone who snacks a lot during the day then make sure it is all healthy and filling. Add
yoghurt (vanilla flavour will add a nice taste) with strawberries, bananas and berries. Being healthy
does not have to be boring, but spoil yourself once a week with your guilty foods.

Boys & Girls Clubs Of America Partner With Amway To Encourage Healthy Eating & Nutrition

As a parent, it is so important to teach children to help others and, for that reason, we do our part in the community here in the mountains. One of the organizations that does amazing things for our town is the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. I see what a difference they have made in the lives of children as well as in our community. There are many fun activities scheduled for children each month as well as fun ways to give back, such as picking up trash at our local park. BGCA has many different initiatives and projects going on at one time, all of which are noteworthy and important. Right now Boys & Girls Clubs of America is partnering with Amway to promote nutrition for Club members by supporting community gardens and more.
Through the POSITIVE SPROUTS® Program Amway is giving away $30,000 in Sustainability Grants to ten Boys & Girls Clubs who previously received community gardens from Amway. The funds given are to maintain the community gardens and to improve nutrition for Club members.

Amway is also donating 150 Garden In A Box Kits to Boys & Girls Clubs who demonstrate a want and need to establish a community gardening program! The kits include a variety of fruit, seeds and supplies needed to get the garden started and to start growing nutritious foods. In addition, Amway is providing POSITIVE SPROUTS® Curriculum  for 4,000 Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide, which makes sure they have access to educational materials promoting healthy eating habits!
These are such great ways to help promote nutrition. What better way to learn than by planting your own community garden and eating the foods you have worked hard to grow. My kids and I plant a garden every spring and it's so rewarding when we finally get to eat the fruits and veggies. With Boys & Girls Clubs and Amway, many communities and children will not only learn about nutrition in a positive way, but also gain great experience! Click Here to learn more about the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Amway partnership.

Have your children participated in activities with Boys & Girls Clubs of America? Be sure to follow them on Facebook and Twitter!

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Amway. I received a promotional item as a thank-you for participating.

Voots Veggie-Fruit Tarts Review & Giveaway

Pharmavite has recently added a fun new supplement called Voots Veggie-Fruit Tarts to their line-up. They are a children's supplement made from 11 real fruits and vegetables, which are dehydrated, crushed, blended with Vitamin C and other beneficial ingredients, and made into chewable berry-flavored tablets. You'll find no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives in Voots. So just what are the fruits and veggies that go into each Voots tablet? I was very impressed to discover that apples, cranberries, oranges, prunes, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, carrots, sweet potatoes, zucchinis and green beans are packed into those tiny tarts - wow!

Our family received this really fun pack of goodies from Voots. It included a t-shirt, lunch bag, pencil sharpener, magnet picture frame, temporary tattoos, and the star of the show - a 45-day supply of Voots Veggie Fruit Tarts supplements.

My children were so excited about their package, and with the help of 9-year-old Joseph, everyone had a Voots tattoo applied within minutes! The next order of business was to sample the supplements. Catherine (8) and Samuel (2) and I (yes, mama was curious!) loved the sweet but slightly tangy taste of the tablets. Joseph (9) and Benjamin (2) were less enthusiastic. Their mutual verdict seemed to be that although the supplements were "pretty good" they weren't as tasty as candy. When I asked "would you take them every day?" they both answered "yes!"

As a dietary supplement for children, I would give the Voots Veggie-Fruit Tarts my highest rating. They were readily accepted by all of my children, ranging in ages from 2 to 9. They contain the same amount of Vitamin C power that you'd get in 3 servings of fruits and veggies. The adorable fruit and veggie characters were a big hit with everyone. And the way they come in single serve packages makes it's easy and fun to hand them out.

Voots Veggie-Fruit Tarts vary slightly in price, depending on where you buy. On Amazon, they retail for $8.56 for a 14-day supply (ages 4 and up). You can also find Voots at Target and Sam's Club. There's also a handy store locator at the Voots website.

Thanks to Voots Veggie-Fruit Tarts, One Lucky Children Teaching Mama Reader Will Receive The Same Awesome Back-To-School Prize Package We Received (A Value of $30!), Which Includes:
-An adorable t-shirt featuring the Voots brand fruit and veggie characters
-A reusable lunch bag to help pack up those healthy meals for your kids as they head back to class
-A pencil sharpener to keep writing utensils in tip-top shape
-A magnet and picture frame that can be posted around your favorite photo on the fridge
-Temporary tattoos that your children can wear in pride.
-And… a 45-day supply of Voots Veggie-Fruit Tarts!
Just use the Rafflecopter form below to enter. This giveaway ends on Sunday, December 16th at 11:59pm and is open to US Residents 18+ years of age. Good Luck!

Keeping Kids Safe Around Heaters

Well, the winter season is here and my blanket no longer seems to be able to provide sufficient warmth for me to get through the day – that, and the fat that the rest of the family complain about it being cold as well! Purchasing a heater or radiator in preparation for the cold months ahead could be one of the most useful purchases you make for yourself and for your family however when there are kids in the household, the issue of safety arises as well so consider these tips when installing a heater in your house.

Place it where little hands can’t get to it

A simple enough idea but it’s surprising how many people overlook it when selecting a location for their heater. Make sure the heater is out of reach of children because if they can’t get to it then they have no chance of tampering with it and possibly hurting themselves. If you have a shelf which is sufficiently capable of housing something as large as your heater then that would be a good place to put it. Other than this, you can look around your house to identify spots that would be hard for a child to reach but whatever you do, just make sure the heater is placed next to a mains socket – a wire running from one end of the room to the other is quite clearly dangerous and could make your efforts to make your heater child proof counter-productive.

Opt for Non-conductive covers

If it’s an electric heater you’ve purchased, then why not pay that little bit extra and opt for one with non-conductive covers. Non-conductive covers block off any areas which are dangerously hot. No matter where you place your heater, chances are, the kids will get to it one way or another since children are ‘explorers’! If they can’t immediately reach it or touch it, they want it even more installing non-conductive covers will mean that if your children do end up touching your electric heater, they will feel a soothing warmth rather than a burning heat.  The downside to this solution of course is that your room will have a reduced level of heat but the potential safety benefits may just make this option worth it. Let us know if you think non-conductive covers on electric heaters are a good idea in the comments section.

Considerations before purchasing the heater

Taking suitable precautions once the heater has been installed is all well and good but keeping safety in mind before purchasing a heater can make life a lot simpler when it comes to keeping your kids safe around a heater. Looking for a heater with an automatic off switch would be a good place to start. This would ensure that the heater automatically switches itself off in case any meddling hands give it a push and tipple it over. Also, consider a heater which heats the air above it rather than something that lets out heat near the bottom of the heater where a child could possibly put their hand.

After reading the above article, a general rule must have started to emerge - use common sense when installing a heater. Try to think about what a child could do to hurt themselves with your heater and how you can prevent that.
