Parents Palooza - A Great Time Had By All

Parents Palooza, the family event and parenting expo of the year in Atlanta, took place this past weekend and I had the honor of attending and being a part of it's very first year. Unfortunately, I was sickly, but I pressed on and still had a ball, met some wonderful people, and can't wait for next year.
Here are some pictures:

That's me with my awesome Children Teaching Mama sign courtesy of BuildASign.com! It looked wonderful.

This is me getting ready for the Saturday rush! I was putting all the freebies out on the two tables. We ended up having a ton of great freebies from LifeNest, Children Teaching Mama, Happy Baby, Spry, Boiron, Lansinoh, and Kroger!
This was the huge giveaway package, including items from LifeNest, Natursutten (pacifiers & teething ring), Skoy Cloths, Happy Baby (coupons & baby book), Lansinoh (Affinity Breast Pump & Accessories), Spry, EcoMom ($50 Gift Card) & Zoe B! The prize package was worth OVER $500! Wow! Thanks to all of the wonderful sponsors! LifeNest is such an awesome product, which keeps baby elevated and reduces the chance of suffocation (with a soft mesh backing if they roll over). We were so excited to have it on display and think it is a MUST for newborns and infants!

This was my weekend helper, John! He came to help out since I was sick and the hubs had to work. Thanks, John! I couldn't have done any of it without him, for sure, especially lift all of those boxes.
Of course, we couldn't sit still the entire time. There was so much going around us, a circus, TumbleBus, RockBand competitions, and that's not even one row of fun!

Yes, be jealous, I met Slangman. Do you even know who he is? Fine. He is on PBS, thank you very much! He's super nice AND sponsoring a future giveaway of his children's foreign language through fairy tales books.
So, if you watch PBS like we do, you will definitely know who this band is, right? It's Laughing Pizza! You may not know their name, but you would definitely recognize their songs, which are played in between cartoons and such during the day. Josiah loves them so, he got a t-shirt AND I'll be attending the Laughing Pizza show this fall... which means a prize package giveaway for you guys, too! Yay!

Well, that's about it! The weekend went by much too quickly, but we'll have some great giveaways coming up after my March event. I've already talked to the organizer about next year's event and, believe me, you won't want to miss it. Plus, there will be a ton of early events to help advertise Parents Palooza and give everyone a chance to win some goodies.

If you are coming here to find out the winner of the Mama-To-Be Package, check back tomorrow afternoon. The winner will be chosen and posted by then. Oh, and thanks to several of my readers who stopped by! It was so exciting to meet everyone.

Thanks to all of the wonderful sponsors! We really appreciate your help and love spreading the word about helpful and innovative baby products.

Kids Going To School Soon & Other Thoughts

Josiah will be starting preschool this year and I've already been thinking about his future education. It's amazing how early one must begin planning a child's future education, some (in bigger cities) must begin even before birth! We actually live in a rural area, which brings about other issues, such as where to get the best education, what educational supplements we can use, etc.

I know we all want the best for our children and that's why it's important to give children the encouragement they need to succeed, as well as the resources to reach that success. I want my children to have access to any and all information and help they need with their studies. I know, realistically, that I may not be able to provide the help needed for my children to succeed in all subjects, especially when it comes to upper-level math courses.

StudyPoint actually provides many educational resources and tutoring for ages K-12, including Math tutoring, SAT tutoring, ACT tutoring, language skills tutoring, and much more! Parents can even download a free college admissions guide.

Why do I recommend StudyPoint over other online programs? Their services are available in cities around the US, including Atlanta (near us). They have also been named, once again, to the INC 5,000 fastest growing private companies in the US. However, their true success is measured by the amount of help they have provided for students. They have helped and encouraged over 13,000 students across the US to increase their test scores, study skills, and confidence to succeed. What more, as parents, can we ask for? I will definitely be making use of their services in the near future!

Need Your Help On Cloth Diapering Mission #1 - Vote For Me

Today I was accepted as a candidate for Prilosec OTC sponsorship as their "Cloth Diaper Whisperer"! They are looking for people to sponsor and I submitted my plan to spread the word about cloth diapers, to start my own cloth diaper program in my county, and to travel around to conferences!

So, what does this mean? I need votes! Please click HERE when you have a moment to vote for me! The more votes, the better chance I have of winning funding for all of my projects and the more I will be able to teach others about cloth diapering!

Kathryn The Grape Children's Book Review & Giveaway

About The Book

POOF! Just Like Magic! That’s how easy it is to fall in love with Kathryn the Grape and her magical butterfly friend, Maggie! These inspiring characters teach that each of us has our own magic within. As your children read along, they will discover their own inner strength and fearlessness, learn about making new friends, and learn the importance of helping others. Kathryn the Grape takes the reader on a journey of discovery and spreads the message that everyone is magical! [40 page 10" x 8" hardcover picture book, ages 3-8]

About The Author

As the original Kathryn the Grape, Kathryn Cloward embraced the childhood nickname given to her by her childhood softball coach, drew on her own life experiences, and created this children’s book series that is so close to her heart.

Co-Author
Jody Duhamel is a passionate, creative contributor in the Kathryn the Grape series. Duhamel is inspired by her family and her desire to teach children of all ages that they should not allow others to define them.

My Thoughts

The day we received Kathryn the Grape, Josiah knew exactly what he wanted to read at bedtime. He was immediately drawn to the bright purples and pinks. Once we started reading the book, Josiah was in heaven with all of the illustrations and, of course magic!

Kathryn faces real-life challenges that definitely hit home for other children- monsters under the bed, trying out for a team, starting school, etc. Josiah actually had a nightmare the other night about a monster in his brother's closet and he will be starting preschool this fall so, this book will be helpful through all of these situations and worries. With some help from Maggie, Kathryn's magical butterfly and a magic wand, "POOF! Just Like Magic" Kathryn can face her problems head on!

It's a wonderful story and encourages children to meet their own challenges without fear. Everyone needs a little magic in their lives, too. I was reminded of The Little Princess and the quote,"All little girls are princesses"! All children are magical and special in their own ways and sometimes they just need to be reminded. Children from ages 3-8 will definitely enjoy this book.

The Healing Code Book Review & Giveaway

The Healing Code: 6 Minutes to Heal the Source of Your Health, Success, or Relationship Issue
Product Description

The Healing Code: 6 Minutes to Heal the Source of Your Health, Success, or Relationship Issue neuro-immune system takes over its job of healing whatever is wrong with the body. His findings were validated by tests and by the thousands of people from all over the world who have used The Healing Codes system to heal virtually any physical, emotional, or relational issue, as well as realize breakthroughs in success.

His testing also revealed that there is a "Universal Healing Code" that will heal most issues for most people. In this book you will get that Universal Healing Code, which takes only minutes to do. The book also includes:

  • The Seven Secrets of life, health, and prosperity
  • The 10-second Instant Impact technique for defusing daily stress
  • The Heart Issues Finder, the only test that identifies your source issues in a succinct personalized report.
My Thoughts

Before I read The Healing Code, I had no idea what to expect. The synopsis left much to the imagination so, I was expecting a new age approach to living. However, The Healing Code focuses more on the power of faith by using God as a source of energy and strength.

While I do my best to avoid the topic of religion on my blog, I do agree that faith is oftentimes a very powerful source of encouragement.  I also agree with the book, which hones in on the importance of positive thinking.

Positive thinking has the ability to improve your mental and physical health, which, in turn, can completely alter your life for the better. It can increase happiness, health, and even your success in life. The Healing Code gives you ideas and suggestions to being positive and improving your life, defeating illness, and being happy. Do they work? You be the judge!

The Portable Pediatrician Book Review & Giveaway

The Portable Pediatrician: Everything You Need to Know About Your Child's Health
As a new parent, all of the advice and information can be overwhelming. Heck, as a parent of two, it still is sometimes! It's great to have a go-to-guide when questions arise.. and, yes, they will come up all too often! That's where The Portable Pediatrician: Everything You Need to Know About Your Child's Health come in!

Product Description

Imagine you are up at three o'clock in the morning with a sick child. Wouldn't it be nice to have expert advice readily at hand to help get you through the night? Encyclopedic in scope, THE PORTABLE PEDIATRICIAN features timely and practical information on every childhood illness and emergency, including when to call the doctor, what reassuring signs can help you know your child is okay, how to treat your child at home, and much more-all in a convenient A-to-Z format. Among the scores of topics covered:

teething; sprains and broken bones; nosebleeds; measles; ear infections; choking; rashes; colic; headaches; eating disorders; fever; hip pain; warts; allergies; obesity; seizures; Asperger's Syndrome; bronchitis; masturbation; sunburns; pneumonia; speech delay; lice; vomiting; asthma; heart defects; blisters; sleep problems; and more.

The Searses guide parents and caregivers from a child's infancy through the teen years, teaching them what to expect at regular checkups as well as how to boost a child's well-being, devise a family health plan, work effectively with their pediatrician, and more. Distinguished by the Searses' trademark comprehensiveness, reliability, and accessible, comforting one, this book is a must-have for all families who want to keep their children healthy and happy.

About the Authors

William Sears, MD, and Martha Sears, RN, are the pediatric experts on whom American parents increasingly rely for advice and information on all aspects of pregnancy, birth, childcare, and family nutrition. Dr. Sears has practiced pediatrics for more than 40 years, and is an associate clinical professor at the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine. Martha Sears is a registered nurse and parenting and health consultant. Robert W. Sears, MD, is a board-certified pediatrician in private practice in southern California. James Sears, MD, is a board-certified pediatrician and co-host of The Doctors. Peter Sears, MD, is a board-certified physician specializing in family practice in Nashville, TN.

My Thoughts

When I was pregnant with Josiah and a new Mama, I often went to the internet for information regarding milestones, sicknesses, etc. Let me just say, this is NOT the place you want to look. The information you find is not always up-to-date, accurate, and is oftentimes just downright scary. Once he was born, we bought 2 books and if one book didn't have the info we were seeking, we'd go to the other. It was frustrating, especially in the middle of the night when your child's temperature is 103.5!

What I love about The Portable Pediatrician is that most, if not all, of the information you will need can be found in the book. Plus, there is a great deal of information about what to expect as your baby grows into a toddler, child, and teen. From what I've heard, we parents need all the help we can get  for those teenage years so, why not go ahead and get started?

Just the opposite of Ferber's methods (no cosleeping, letting baby "cry it out", etc.), Dr. Sears methods have formed what is now known as attachment parenting, agreeing with the wonderful benefits of co-sleeping, babywearing, and breastfeeding.

As highly regarded physicians, the Sears family has provided a invaluable amount of information, suggestions, and parenting advice in only 592 pages. I highly recommend this book for parents-to-be, parents, and caregivers. It's a great book to have on-hand for any issues and emergencies. Plus, it's a great informational read!

Deals & Freebie Blog Update

Well, I've been thinking about it and I am going to keep the deals blog separate from Children Teaching Mama... for now! I'll see how much I can keep up with and go from there. I love my freebies and coupons, but I don't want that to become the focus of CTM. I'd honestly like to write more about organics and natural parenting, my goal from the beginning so, hopefully I can find a way to make this work for now!

Anyways, if you like your deals and freebies, head on over to my new deals blog "Deal"irious Diva! Give me a follow and keep up with some great deals. I'm setting up feedburner, too, so, everyone can sign up for the newsletter shortly. I plan to have at least 5 deals listed per day!

Deal Blog Update- Questionnaire

Hi, everyone! I wanted to thank all of you who have already followed my deal blog! I've temporarily abandoned the project for several reasons right now. The first is that, after two days of beginning the blog, I received a Cease and Desist letter telling me I'd stolen someone else's name. Yes, someone else had a similar blog name. Oops! I swear I'd looked for that name everyone and never saw it. Darn Swagbucks toolbar!
Anyways, I had to go through and change everything- the name of the blog, twitter name, and facebook page. Ugh! What a pain! I just chose a name I'm not really very fond of, but had to think quick. So, now I'm at a crossroads and need my readers' opinions!

Possible Project- Need Your Opinions

I have a question for all of my readers! I was looking around Kickstarter, a website where you can share your project ideas and raise money. You have a certain amount of time to earn funding and, if you make it to that amount, you will do the project!
Now, I have a pretty cool project idea, in my opinion, but wanted to see what you all thought! How about a Cloth Diaper Encyclopedia? It could tell about the origin and history of cloth diapers, how they have evolved over the years, and how they are coming back. I'd also include interviews with people who cloth diaper their children, companies that make cloth diapers, and stay at home parents who support their family from making cloth diapers.
So, what do you think? Would it sell? Is this something you would be willing to donate $1 or so for? If you guys think so, I'll give it a try!

Flightless Goose Children's Book Review & Giveaway

Flightless Goose

Book Description (from Amazon.com)
Flightless Goose is a story based around a real goose which lived on a lake in Columbus, Ohio. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, the goose was unable to fly south for the winter with the other geese. Eric and Nataliya Goodman, after witnessing the incident, named the goose Gilbert, and envisioned a beautiful tale that would delight children, while subtly teaching them lessons about self worth, tolerance, and friendship.

Every child will be able to identify with Gilbert and his adventures for he liked to swim, and run, and fly. Let s go Gilbert!

Product Details
  • Reading level: Ages 4-8
  • Hardcover: 48 pages
  • Publisher: The Writer's Lair Books (November 15, 2008)
  • Language: English
 My Thoughts

When I read about this book, I couldn't wait to get it for Josiah. He loves books and this looked right up his alley. Last year we read The Ugly Duckling and, as this book is comparable, I thought he would enjoy it. As I read Flightless Goose by Eric D. Goodman, he was absolutely captivated! The goose, Gilbert, is so endearing and lovable, that you can't help but enjoy his story. To learn that Gilbert is a real goose just makes the story even more heart-warming.

We read this story 3 times in one day and each time Josiah sat, looking at the pictures, asking questions, and enjoying every page. The illustrations are very pretty, too, and go perfectly with the story. This is a longer story for children with a wider attention span and a bit more difficult for beginning readers.

I definitely recommend Flightless Goose. Your children will love this book and want to read it over and over. Believe me!

Five Little Bunnies Review & Giveaway

Five Little Bunnies Lap Book (Lap Books & CD)

Five Little Bunnies by Twin Sister Production is an adorable board book teaching children simple counting with fun and exciting illustrations. It's perfect to entertain and teach small children from ages 1-4 and also great for beginning readers. The book also includes a CD with the recorded story and 19 new and classic children's songs!

My Thoughts

With a 1 year-old and 3 year old in the house, they were so excited to receive this book. They wanted to read it as soon as it arrived. Liam, my 1 year-old, enjoyed the pictures, pointing at everything as I turned pages while Josiah practiced his counting skills with the disappearing bunnies.

It's a cute book and will definitely entertain smaller children. Also, since it's a board book, it will last much longer than paperbacks! I can see it also being a great book for children in kindergarten, learning to read. The CD is a great addition, with a read along story and fun songs for the kids to sing along to and dance! Josiah loves all of the songs and wants to listen to it all the time.

Valentine's Memories

I wanted to wish everyone a Happy Valentine's Day! I wanted to post a cute photo of my two loves, but, looking back at all of them, it was really hard to choose. :) Since Liam was a preemie, he stayed at the hospital for 2 weeks and Josiah was not allowed to see him so, the first day Josiah saw him was the day we brought him home...

Josiah couldn't take his eyes off of Liam, wanting to pet him and kiss his head every few minutes. It was definitely love at first sight. He was so excited and keeps telling Mama he wants a baby girl sister. LOL!

This photo is an entry for Heart + U = UPrinting Valentine photo contest. Make your Valentine photos extra special through poster printing.

It's hard enough to get away from the kids for a few minutes or an hour, let alone an entire day or weekend! How nice it would be to have an entire weekend just for US. As parents, we all know what it's like to put our children first and our wants second. Well, this post is just for YOU!

My cousin threw a Pure Romance party at her house a few months ago, but, of course, one of the kids got sick so, I couldn't go. When I heard about this review and giveaway opportunity, I jumped on it. Everyone raves about Pure Romance and their unique, premier products that cannot be found in stores. Here was finally my chance to get to try them out.

I received a huge box of goodies and, though I will blush in the midst of writing this review, I'll carry on. There are some things I won't mention, but you can check out the Pure Romance website to see all of the wonderful products they offer to help spice up your love life!

Dust Me Pink ($16) - A deliciously edible body powder. You can enjoy this sweet berry flavored powder and stay on your diet! It's sugar-free and lots of fun couples!

Excape Bath & Shower Gel - Spice up your bath or shower with this pheromone-infused bath and shower gel, which comes in 3 scents: Breeze, Plumeria, and Mangosteen! I tried Plumeria (one of my favorite scents) and it smelled wonderful.

Aura Massage Oil - This happens to be my very favorite product out of the package I received. I love getting massages and am very, very picky about massage oils that are too icky or dry too quickly, but Aura worked very well. I received the Sage scented Aura Massage Oil and, no, it doesn't smell like turkey dressing. One of my friends was convinced I'd smell just like Thanksgiving dinner, but that definitely was NOT the case. At only $15, this is a great deal and also comes in another scent, Eucalyptus Mint.

Those are just a few of my favorite products I received, though there were several more included in the mix I'll fail to mention due to their more adult nature... and the fact that if I turn any redder, I might turn into a beet. So, if I haven't frightened you off just yet, here's the great giveaway portion!

Belle Baby Carrier Review & Giveaway

Before Josiah was born in 2007, I really wanted a nice baby carrier. Someone bought us a Baby Bjorn and I was so excited... until we tried to put him in it. He screamed the entire time, seemed uncomfortable, and, I must admit, I wasn't very comfortable either. I gave up on carriers until Liam was born.

Last year I tried wraps and then was lucky enough to review a Belle Baby Carriers, a carrier much different from others on the market. The Belle is all about comfort, for baby and for parents. The cross-over straps are made with extra padding. there is extra padding in baby's leg area, and there is even a removable head panel with extra head support for smaller babies.
What else makes Belle Baby Carriers stand out? With buckles made from the same materials used in high-quality mountaineering backpacks, you can be assured that baby is safe and secure. The strap around your hips is also locked into place by steel rings and the same material used in yoga mats, making it completely fail-proof. Do you have back problems? The Belle is designed to bring pressure and weight off of your shoulders and onto your hips, making this carrier one of the most comfortable carriers on the market!

My Thoughts

I honestly cannot say enough great things about the Belle Baby Carrier. From the moment it arrived I had to try it out and have used it ever since! I have extreme back issues from pregnancy and early arthritis so, the baby wrap just wasn't giving me the support needed. Plus, I had issues putting it on correctly without someone to help and it just kept slipping, no matter how hard I tied it.
See how little support the wrap gave?
With the Belle, I strapped the steel rings around my waist, snapped one strap loosely and put Liam right in without an issue. Then I tightened the straps and he was good to go! While smaller babies can face inward for more support, Liam was old enough to face out to see the world.
This picture was featured in our hometown newspaper! He really is happy, I promise! The sun was in his eyes.

If you are already a follower of my blog, you probably know Liam was a preemie and has several developmental issues. At 15 months, he still cannot walk so, the Belle has been a great help for him gaining more strength in his upper body and getting to experience the world. I love having him so close and, in return, I can see and hear his responses to the environment around him and actually respond to him, something often miss when a child is in a stroller. There are so many reasons why to choose babywearing!

The Belle Baby Carrier is, by far, the most comfortable baby carrier I have tried. Liam gets so excited when I put him in it, too. What more could I ask for? I know Liam is safe and secure inside, too. I highly recommend Belle Baby Carriers for anyone looking for a comfortable, quality baby carrier. Plus, they also come in a variety of colors, designs, and there are even organic options!
